Analytic characterization of random errors in spectral dual-polarized cloud radar observations

Abstract. This study presents the first-ever complete characterization of random errors in dual-polarimetric spectral observations meteorological targets by cloud radars. The is given means mathematical equations for joint probability density functions (PDFs) and error covariance matrices. derived are checked consistency using real radar measurements. One main conclusions that convenient representation polarimetric measurements including differential reflectivity ZDR, correlation coefficient ρHV, phase ΦDP not suited proper matrix. because aforementioned quantities complex, non-linear raw data, thus their matrix commonly simplified linear relations neglecting errors. formulates terms a different set allows analytic treatment results this allow utilization advanced applications, among which variational retrieval techniques, data assimilation, sensitivity analysis.
